چکیده

Erythrocytes are the most abundant cells (around 5 million/mm3) in the body. The main function of these specialized cells is transport of oxygen (O2) and mediation of carbondioxide (CO2) production (Volpe, 1993). Mature erythrocytes have no capacity for cell division, protein synthesis, and mitochondrial-based oxidative reactions (Bunn, 1991; Benz, 2010). The erythrocyte possesses more membrane surface area than is needed to encase the volume of its cytoplasm. This allows for biconcave disc geometry. This shape can be stretched, twisted, distended, and compressed without permanent damage (Benz, 2010).

The importance of carnosine to erythrocyte rheology

Carnosine is a naturally occuring multifunctional dipeptide made up of a chemical combination of the amino acids beta-alanine and L-histidine.It commonly presents in mammalian tissues, in especially high levels in long-lived cells (e.g.nerve and muscle), but it declines with age. Its main physiological function is uncertain although many possibilities have been proposed including physiological ...

The effect of L-carnosine on erythrocyte deformability and aggregation according to the cell age in young and aged rats.

This study aimed to investigate alterations in hemorheology induced by L-carnosine, an anti- oxidant dipeptide, and to determine their relationship to oxidative stress in density-separated erythrocytes of aged and young rats. 28 male Sprague Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups as aged (Aca), young (Yca) L-carnosine groups (250 mg/kg L-carnosine, i.p.) and aged (As), young (Ys) control groups...

Background and Objective: Diabetes mellitus (DM) affects synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus, leading to impairments in learning and memory. L-carnosine, an endogenous dipeptide, is reported to exhibit anti-diabetic and antioxidant effects. Therefore, this study was designed to evaluate its effect on learning and memory in diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: In the present study, male Wis...

Objective: Cancer has risen as the main cause of diseases with the highest rate of mortality in the world. Drugs used in cancer, usually demonstrate side effects on normal tissues. On the other hand, anticancer small peptides, effective on target tissues, should be safe on healthy organs, as being naturally originated compounds. In addition, they may have good pharmacokinetic properties. carnos...
